«On December 29, 1875, the prompter's benefit performance was «Don Juan» and the theatre was full. The audience were mostly dressed up, and both the actors and the audience left the theatre full of pleasant impressions. Two hours later, we heard that the theatre was on fire... The fire lasted for two days, leaving only the theatre walls and the remains of the House.»

Ivan Kupchinsky «Theatre in Kursk»

Since that time, first the theatre troupes a had performed in the building of the city military arena that was converted to the theatre stage. Then it was only the Summer Garden where the performances took place.

10 years later, with donations from wealthy Kursk citizens, a new Winter Theatre was opened, rebuilt from the military arena. The first performance was the operetta «Donna Juanita» by Franz von Supper on December 1, 1886.
