In 1921, the Culture of Art magazine started to be published in Kursk and its editor Ilya Strelsky wrote:

«We need to drastically change the existing perception of the theatre as entertainment or fun. Art and theatre form one of the significant phenomena of life. Theatre is not a place of fun but a temple of science, and to instill such a view in the general population, we need to give these people an opportunity to visit the theatre as often as possible»

On March 16, 1926, the premiere of «Poison» by Anatoly Lunacharsky took place in the Shchepkin Winter Theatre. It was directed by Vladimir Obraztsov.
